Personal Statements and Notes

Model Cadet

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Lee Lee's Intermediate eventer, Model Cadet. Lee Lee bought Cadet from our good friend Bruce Duchossois as a 5 year old and had a very successful career together. Lee Lee and Cadet were 4th at the American Eventing Chamionships in their first year competing together. They then went on to numerous placings at the Preliminary level and successfully completed their first One Star together at Bromont this past June. Lee Lee and Cadet also successfully completed their first Intermediate together at Plantation in September. Cadet was kind, loving and even tempered. He will be loved and missed forever.

Woodburn

It is with great sadness that I write that Woodburn was put down yesterday. He had what seems like an internal hemorrage. I don't know where to start to describe how I feel about this. In this year we have truly experienced the reality of life and the consequences of tragedy. Most horse people understand the trust, love and respect that one has with a horse after a certain bonding time together. For those fortunate enough to ride around a four star this love, trust and respect is multiplied by 100. I have no doubt that I will never ride a better cross country horse in my life. To encompass speed, endurance, athleticism and bravery in one horse is very unique. As a pair, we never had a cross country jumping fault. Many times these rides were under difficult circumstances including a very wet Burghley in 2008 and being the anchor ride for the US team at the WEG last year. The feeling of coming out of the start box on Woodburn with him rising up with confidence to take on each jump was such a priveledge. He was a highly strung athlete that was potentially brilliant in whatever he did. He excited everyone that worked with him because of his amazing talent and potential in each phase. I have experienced so much disappointment and sadness this year, but this seems to have effected me more because of how good he was and how good he could have been.

Everyone associated with Woodburn is so devastated, none more so than his groom of many years and best friend, Emma Ford. My thoughts and prayers are with her. So many people helped him through his career in this country including Liz Millikin, Emily Basheer, Kevin Keane, Brendon Furlong, Steve Tiechman, Katie and Henri Prudent, Lauren Hough, Oded Shimoni, Mark Phillips and Sara Ike. I also want to thank on mine and his behalf his owners Jess, Sharon and Robyn Sweely, Annie Jones and Mardie Faucette.

I realize that this is part of the sport and life and I feel very fortunate to have had Woodburn as a partner, but it is very difficultl to accept his loss. He will be terribly missed.
